My son loves that he cannot figure out the picture until he is nearly done with the dot-to-dot. He says it makes it much more fun. If he can figure it out quickly, he finds it boring because it is too easy. My son is 14.

My son was bored at his afterschool program so I got him several 'extreme' dot to dot books. He loves them and now the afterschool program is purchasing them.

12 year old loved it immediately. He was doing two per day until he realized he was seeing 'spots with numbers' when he closed his eyes.
