Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sound Science is a Sound Kit for the Instructor Overall, this kit is well thought out, but it requires supervision by an instructor in order for a child to get the most from it. There are many experiments and all the components are in the kit or easily found in most homes. The book guides one through each of the experiments and describes not only how to do the experiment but also what the experiment demonstrates about sound science. There are also a number of experiments that are supported through the website described in the book that comes with the kit. The supervising teacher should practice each experiment to get a feel as to how it works. That is especially true about using the cylinder phonograph. The device takes too much time to build compared to what you get from it when it is finished. The record and play back system works, but you need to develop a good technique if you expect to recognize what you recorded on the playback. Recording and playback is best done under the direct supervision of demonstrated by someone who has already mastered the technique. I think that if Edison was forced to use the the device as it is for his recordings he would have been frustrated. In part, It was the clear intent of the developer of the kit to encourage the student to explore ways of making the device work better. The book suggests trying different diaphragms, not only the metal and plastic on that comes with the kit, but also making a diaphragm from cardboard from the back of the box and from the plastic of the inner lid of the box. However, this encouragement to improve the device is only briefly mentioned in the book. Nevertheless, I would recommend this kit and I do not regret buying it.
